FONDO MARIANI

Browse through more than 1,500 images of monuments, archaeological excavations and classical artworks collected by archaeologist Lucio Mariani (1865-1924) and donated by his daughter Lucilla to our Institute in 1964.

A large number of images are dedicated to public collections of classical art (especially museums in Rome and Athens), archaeological excavations in Africa and the Near East - referring to Mariani's positions at the Ministry of Colonies (particularly in Libya: Cirene, Tripoli, Benghazi) - and investigations conducted in some centers of ancient Italy.

Special mention is made of the documentation relating to the triumphal Arch of Marcus Aurelius in Tripoli at the time of the Italian restoration campaign (1913), as well as to the mosaics of Zliten and shots taken at Alfedena (AQ) and other places where Lucio Mariani conducted archaeological researches.

As far as Rome alone is concerned, the quantity of photographic material is a sort of illustrated catalog of the ancient art monuments that existed in the city at the beginning  of XX century.
